Rules primer after a clean extract
Install first: AmericanCheckers release zip from the current release tag, extract, run AmericanCheckers.exe. Rules talk is useless if the binary never opens. Upstream how-to-play pages describe American board style movement for this project.
Starting position
- Twelve men per side on dark squares.
- Far row is kings row.
- Confirm colours on your first launch.
Each side begins with twelve men on dark squares of the three nearest rows. The far row is the kings row. Red moves first in the traditional telling upstream adapts; confirm colours on your screen during the first checkers game.
Simple moves
A simple move steps one square diagonally onto an empty dark square. Uncrowned men move forward only. Kings may move diagonally in both directions once crowned. Light squares are not playing squares in this board style.
- Prefer GitHub Releases.
- Extract the Windows zip fully.
- Run AmericanCheckers.exe from that folder.
Jumps and captures
A jump vaults over an adjacent opponent piece onto the empty square beyond along the same diagonal. Captured pieces leave the board. Upstream notes emphasize that jumping is mandatory when available, even when the jump looks bad strategically.
Multiple jumps
If another jump is immediately available after a capture, continue with that piece. When several multi-jump paths exist, choose among them; you must complete the path you start. Confirm edge cases locally if you teach tournament variants.
- Prefer GitHub Releases.
- Extract the Windows zip fully.
- Run AmericanCheckers.exe from that folder.
Crowning kings
When a man reaches the opponent’s kings row, it becomes a king. Upstream notes that entering the kings row ends the current move for crowning, including when arrival happened by jump. Kings are marked with asterisks in this build’s drawing approach per README.
Ending the game
You win by capturing all opponent pieces or by leaving the opponent with no legal move. Draws and club house rules are outside the install scope of this board guide; agree them before a match if needed.
- Keep Releases as the only download door.
- Extract the whole zip before launch.
- Prove one local game after setup.
Controls on AmericanCheckers.exe
Mouse clicks select and move pieces on the drawn board. Menus include save and open dialogs for .SAV files and recording features for .CKH replays. Sound effects play when wav files sit beside the exe.
Scope limits for rules talk
It is not a draughts / windama brand-first essay. It is not Microsoft Board documentation. It is not freecell or chess rules. Adjacent games stay on their own hosts so this board phrase remains clear.
Practice plan
Play one calm game focusing on mandatory jumps. Play a second game aiming to crown a king. Save once. That sequence proves rules plus file habits after extract.

Sources to re-read
Upstream README and the author’s how-to-play page linked from the repository. When house rules conflict with upstream text, document the house rule separately so students know which board variant you are playing.
Soft parks reminder
Windows remains the only shipped desktop OS on the reviewed tag. Do not invent macOS rule clients for this zip. No winget id was found for AmericanCheckers on the research date.
Teaching jumps without shame
New players often miss mandatory jumps. Pause and point at the available capture instead of calling it cheating. American board style play expects that discipline; house rules that make jumps optional should be written on the wall so arguments end quickly.
Crown demonstrations work best with a deliberate setup position rather than a random blitz game. Save that setup as a .SAV so every class starts from the same board lesson.
Compare briefly with international draughts only to say Square Quill does not cover flying kings or 10×10 boards. Students who need those rules should use a different client on a different ticket, not a fork of this zip.
Keep GitHub Releases as the download door, extract fully, then launch AmericanCheckers.exe.
Mouse accuracy on high-DPI displays matters. If clicks miss squares, check scaling settings before blaming the binary. Extract layout still matters more than theme packs you might remember from Store board.
End each rules session by returning to the install door: Releases, zip, extract, exe. Rules knowledge without a trustworthy binary is how clubs slide back into portal downloads for board.
Keep AmericanCheckers release zip on the ticket, extract every file, and refuse portal mirrors that only rank for board. Soft parks stay parked. Square Quill keeps Square Quill aligned with GitHub Releases for fffelix-jan/AmericanCheckers under MIT.
Keep GitHub Releases as the download door, extract fully, then launch AmericanCheckers.exe.
